July Club Activity - Member Only Tour Sunday, July 9, 2006 The club activity for July will be a member only tour of 5 water gardens in Chillicothe. Note the special date for this activity is Sunday July 9. We will meet at the home of Mel and Carol Gregg, 3109 Cedarcrest, in Chillicothe at 1 PM. These are outstanding water gardens. Some of these ponds were constructed by Natures Beauty Landscaping and some are owner built. One pond is really large with huge boulders and waterfalls with flows of 12,000 gallons per hour. One also has stepping stones across the water garden. This is an opportunity to see a very special water garden so remember to bring your camera. We will also stop in Carrollton on the way back to see a pondless waterfall. Here are the directions to find the starting place for the tour. 1) Go north on Highway 65 to Chillicothe. 2) Continue on Highway 65 to the north side of town past the country club. 3) Turn left (west) on Fairway Drive go the “T” in the road and turn right (north). 4) Go to the first road and turn left (west) on Cedar Crest. 5) Go to 3109 Cedar Crest. The phone number there is 660-646-5330. We will have lunch catered at 1 PM. The cost of the lunch is $5. Please let us know that you are coming so we can have enough food prepared. Call Larry or LaDonna Arrowood at 660 886-8191 to make your reservation by July 5.

I have had a terrible problem this summer with Green Herons and Great Blue Herons eating the fish in my water garden. When I see one of them carrying off one of my nice fish, I want to shoot them. But I have been told that I am not allowed to shoot these birds. Is there some other way to stop these birds from eating my fish. Mad Enough to Kill Dear Mad Enough to Kill, I understand your feelings as I too have had problems with Herons taking my fish. There are not any sure ways to control these birds, but there are some ways to discourage them. One suggestion is to put a net over the pond. I don’t like this idea because it detracts from the beauty of the water garden. Some people have had success with noise makers such as a Japanese “deer scrare”. This makes a clunking sound and is an attractive addition to your garden. Another idea, if you are home a lot, is to keep an eye on the pond and loudly scare them away when you see a bird. Actually, this seems to be one of the most effective deterrents. Since the birds are territorial, try putting a fake heron by the water garden. This will either keep real birds away or attract them during the mating season. If none of these ideas work for you, get plenty of cheap goldfish and hope that the Herons get full before you run out of fish.
