Work Day for Jim The Wonder Dog

The Jim the Wonder Dog garden work day will be on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at 9 AM.  Extensive work needs to be done on the water garden, so we will need a good group of workers.  This is an opportunity for new members to have a hands on experience and learn about water gardening.  We are planning to concrete the coping rocks to prevent the vandalism that has occurred in the last few months.  Come equipped for cleaning a water garden and for rock work.   Please help if you can.

If you are not familiar with the Jim Garden, it’s located on the 100 block of North Lafayette in Marshall, MO.

Blosser Home Service Project

We are starting work on the water garden at the Blosser Ladies Home, 836 E. Eastwood, in Marshall.  This will be a small pre-formed pond because of the limited space available.  Plans include a small waterfall with an overflowing urn.  The area around it will be landscaped with numerous garden ornaments.  The work schedule for this project will be discussed at the April club meeting.  Contact Larry Arrowood if you want information and can not attend the April meeting.

 Marshall Public Library Collection

By Connie Rieth, Treasurer and Club Librarian

Jean Gaddy Wilson, Club member

The club appreciates the opportunity to work with the Marshall Public Library.  The club’s gardening collection at the library will provide citizens with access to high-quality, readable and illustrated books and other materials.  The collection will not only cover water gardening , but also landscaping, trees, shrubs, flowers, and vegetable production, herbs, annuals, perennials and other growing materials.

The club will “tend” this collection of books on a continuous basis, much as we tend our gardens, meaning that the club shall add, subtract, and multiply material in the collection.

Members of the water garden club may check out three books at a time from the collection without paying for a membership to the Marshall Public Library.  Many of our members are from out of the county.  The club has arranged for members to show their current Water Garden Club membership card at the library desk when checking out books from the collection.

A few of the books should not be checked out because they are very large and very expensive.  These will be marked as such and will remain in the library as reference books.

We need more books on a continuous basis.  If any of our club members have books that they are not using and would like to donate to the library, please contact Connie Rieth or Jean Wilson.

The club will buy and install appropriate bookplates for all contributions in this collection.  Each book will have a bookplate that will say “This book donated by (your name) to the Saline County Water Garden Club memorial for Judge Rick R. Wilson”.

This memorial combines the club’s active community service with the excellent community service the Marshall Public Library provides.  We are pleased to grow this memorial with this collection.

 Christmas Party Report

We had a great Christmas party at Mr. B’s in December.   Larry did a bang up job with all his gag gifts.  Door prizes were donated by Fred Geisler, Springwater Nursery, Melinda Gibbs, Village Cellar Second Chance Shop, Country Floral and Keepsakes.

We had several center pieces entered in the center piece contest.  The winners were:

First place---Arline Borchers and Katye Elsea.  Second Place---Denise Cantlin.

Third place---Sandy Hendrix.

The winners will receive a gift certificate from Grandaddy’s Garden

The Lotus Blossom Award was presented to Arline Borchers at the Christmas party. As one of the founding members of the club, Arline has been very active.  Arline and Fred have been on the public pond tour two times and will be on it again this year.  They have worked on each tour and attended most of the club activities.  Arline served as Hospitality Chair and served on that committee for several years.  She has worked on the Jim Garden cleaning and signs up to maintain the garden for 4 weeks each summer.  She has donated door prizes, plants for the gardens, and fish food for the Jim Garden.  Arline is the Vice-President of the club for 2004 and will serve as chair of the Jim Garden Committee.

Fred and Arline have been real assets to the club.  They help wherever they are needed.  We are very pleased to present the Lotus Blossom Award to Arline.

Thanks to Leta

Our special thanks go to Leta Robb for wading in the cold water at the Jim the Wonder Dog garden to remove the rocks that were thrown in the pond by vandals.  The pond looks much better until we can fix it permanently on our work day in April.

Minutes of the March 2004 Meeting

·        Larry Arrowood called the March 18th, 2004 meeting to order.  He asked everyone present to share anything new in his or her gardens.

·        Larry discussed the vandalism that has occurred at the Jim Garden.  There was a discussion on trying to use a surveillance camera to catch the person(s) responsible.  Also the possibility of approaching the city for help.

·        The Jim Garden clean up day will be April 17th at 9AM.  At that time some remodeling will be done to fix the pond.

·        Some of the Master Gardeners present mentioned their program for the year “Plant a row for the hungry”.  This is to encourage gardeners to plant extra vegetables and donate it to local food pantries.

·        The Master Gardeners are also collecting extra plants to donate to “Habitat for Humanity” homes for landscaping.

·        The Blosser home community service project will be done early this year and it should be a one-day digging project.

·        The Golf coarse community service project will not begin until after the pond tour.  They are trying to create an area that people will want to come to and take pictures.

·        Linda Siler, President of the Springfield Water garden club, will present the program at the April meeting.

·                  (Linda is unable to be here in April)

·        The May meeting will be a potluck dinner at Jeanne Wilson’s home and the annual plant exchange.

·        The flyers are printed for the pond tour and need to be placed at garden centers.  A sign up sheet was available.

·        The public pond tour will be held in June.

·        Larry is working on a tour at the Stoutland Fish Hatchery for the July activity.

·        An individual in Waverly has a railroad garden that will be visited in August.
