SHOW-ME WATER

GARDEN TOUR

THIS MONTH

The date is June 29, 2003 from 10 AM to 6 PM.  We have 11 great ponds ready for our visitors to enjoy.  Be sure to sell at least the 4 tickets you received.  Call LaDonna Arrowood at (660) 886-8191 if you need additional tickets.  We need the proceeds from the tour for our community service project at the Center for Human Services.

We need your help at the different homes on the tour.  Please plan to work at least one hour to help the homeowners.  Call LaDonna or the home owners to volunteer.

Remember, the club will visit all the same water gardens in August during our “Early Bird” tour and picnic.

Mail your ticket money to PO Box 555, Marshall,  MO. 65340 or turn it in on the day of the tour at the Jim the Wonder Dog Park.

The enclosed tour information is for you to use if you go on the public tour.  You must show a current membership card to get in free.  If you do not have a card, contact Becci Baker, 886-8776.

May 2003 Plant Exchange

We had a good turn out for our May plant exchange and picnic at the park in Marshall.  The club and the Hospitality Committee members provided food.  Dewey Hendrix did his usual good job with the BBQ.  Loads of plants were in the plant exchange.

Plant Tips

by LaDonna Arrowood

We have looked for nice large pots for potting bowl lotus.  It is difficult to find ones without a hole in the bottom.  Katye and Alden Elsea from Woodland Wonders use automobile body putty to fill the hole and then seal the pot with Glocel water shield.  It is a washable elastometric sealer found at most lumber companies.

Jan Vinyard of Longview Gardens in Kansas City told Katye recently that you can plant sun coleus into the water garden.  You should rinse all the dirt off the roots and tuck them in to the rocks in your pond or fill a pot with gravel and put the plant in it.  You can do the same thing with the Polka Dot plant.  You can also leave them potted and put them in the water.  We have been told that Day Lilies work well in water gardens, but Jan said they develop root rot.  The best Day Lily is the Stella D’Oro lily if you introduce it to the water a few inches each day.

Make sure the water temperature is a least 70 degrees day and night before you put tropical lilies in your pond.  Fertilize all your lilies at least once a month with a fertilizer for water lilies.

Arline Borchers has found if you pick off the large lily leaves you will get bigger and more blooms.  But be careful not to remove more than 75% of the water surface since the lily leaves help to shade the pond to reduce algae.

If you get string algae on your waterfall, turn it off for a few days.  The sun will kill the algae.  If you sprinkle pickling salt (without Iodine) on the waterfall when it is off, it will help kill the algae.

When adding any new plants to the water garden, remove them for the pot and rinse the roots and leaves clean.  Then repot them in a clean pot before adding it to the water garden.  This will keep bacteria and parasites from being spread from pond to pond.
